Neurotoxins
Xeomin
Xeomin is a neuromuscular blocking agent, similar to Botox, used to temporarily relax muscles and reduce the appearance of wrinkles and lines, according to the American Academy of Facial Esthetics. It's FDA-approved for treating conditions like cervical dystonia, blepharospasm, and moderate to severe frown lines. Xeomin contains the active ingredient incobotulinumtoxinA, a purified botulinum toxin, which blocks nerve signals to muscles, preventing them from contracting.
Xeomin works by temporarily paralyzing the muscles responsible for facial expressions, smoothing out wrinkles and lines.
Beyond cosmetic purposes, Xeomin is also used for medical conditions like cervical dystonia, blepharospasm, and spasticity.
Both Xeomin and Botox are botulinum toxin type A injections, but Xeomin is purified to isolate the therapeutic component and remove accessory proteins. This can lead to a more homogenous and pure product.
Clinical trials have shown Xeomin to be effective and safe for treating cervical dystonia and other conditions, with some studies indicating non-inferiority to Botox when used in comparable doses, according to the Journal of Neurological Sciences.
Xeomin was approved by the FDA in 2010, making it a widely available and recognized treatment option.
